You may believe only writers can “author change.” You have to be someone who writes books that inspire and motivate people to change, join causes and movements, or take actions that change the world. But that’s not exactly true.
Anyone can author change—even you.
There are people who don’t consider themselves writers but who want to write for change. Writing may not be their primary role or identity. Yet, they realize the power of the printed word to create transformation. So, they want to write a book and become an “Author of Change.”
If not writers, who are these people? Let’s explore 10 types of people who want to—and can successfully—write for change.

First, it’s necessary to understand what I mean by “Author of Change.” I defined this title in my new book, Change the World One Book at a Time: Make a Positive and Meaningful Difference with Your Words. I wrote, “Authors of Change are people from all walks of life—writers, coaches, healers, conscious entrepreneurs, visionaries, experts, parents, and activists—who choose to write books that make a difference… However, all Authors of Change have one thing in common: They feel called to write a book that inspires and motivates change. They want to make a positive and meaningful difference with their words.”
As part of that definition, I identified all 10 types of people who can successfully author change.
1. Transformers
A transformer feels spiritually or morally called to create change. You have an inner need to transform lives or the world and operate with a strong sense of higher calling. You know your message, cause, or movement is something you are meant to pursue. It’s your sacred work during this lifetime to positively transform people, situations, and conditions.
2. Activists
An activist is motivated by injustice, problems, or broken situations that need repair. You feel driven by your values and a strong sense of right versus wrong. You sense the ailing places of the world deeply in your core, and they motivate you to heal them.
3. Messengers
A messenger knows that sharing knowledge and experience provides a means of service. You might sense that your personal story has transformative power. And you feel service is your purpose and the highest act of giving.
4. Experts
An expert is a thought leader or authority in a subject area or industry. You feel a strong urge to offer your knowledge and make a difference. You know your expertise and experience can help others, and you want to give back and use your influence for good.
5. Coaches
A coach trains, guides, and supports individuals, teams, or groups to improve skills, achieve goals, and develop habits and mindsets that help them achieve their potential. You feel a strong desire to support others’ change so they can realize their goals and dreams. You have the knowledge, insight, and skill to help people transform.
6. Healers
A healer seeks to cure diseases, heal injuries, and address mental, emotional, and subconscious challenges, usually by using unconventional treatments. You have learned one or more healing methodologies, or were born with or developed innate healing talents, and you feel called to use them to help others move into the best version of themselves. You know that change often happens on the inside.
7. Conscious Entrepreneurs
A conscious entrepreneur leads a business with strong values, mission, self-awareness, and consciousness of humanity as a whole, focusing beyond profit to create positive impact for customers, employees, community, and the planet. You integrate ethics and mindfulness into your decisions and foster internal growth for your organization’s members, and externally through products and services that serve the greater good—even if they are provided to one customer at a time. You lead with heart, have a strong sense of purpose, and prioritize contribution alongside financial success; your business serves as a vehicle for personal and societal betterment.
8. Visionaries
A visionary thinks about, plans, and sees future possibilities and opportunities. You have internal sight that allows you to imagine a better life, organization, community, planet, or world. You lend your wisdom and intuition to your ability to see and create the change you know is possible.
9. Professional Speakers
A professional speaker gets paid to deliver expert knowledge, insights, or motivation to audiences. You serve as a thought leader, influencer, and role model who develops content (like keynotes, workshops, podcasts, and videos), building a career around communicating effectively and engagingly. You know your words can change lives; every time you stand before an audience and deliver a speech, you intend to inspire and motivate transformation.
10. Writers
A writer is a person who produces books, stories, or articles as a job, occupation, hobby, or way to educate, inspire, motivate, or transform readers. You may write to illuminate issues, share your experiences, or offer your knowledge. You are a strong communicator who has a command of language and can use your words to positively and meaningfully impact those who read your words.
Anyone Can Author Change
You might be wondering how to write for change if you aren’t a writer. As long as you can speak, you can author change.
You can speak your book into existence, and hire an editor to help revise the transcript. Or write a messy draft, and hire an editor to neaten it up. Additionally, you can also hire a ghostwriter. Together, you will create a manuscript.
All 10 types of people described above likely possess the ability to write a book. And if you identify as one of them, your passion and purpose are likely enough to get powerful words on paper and produce a book.
The world needs more people to author change. If you feel the calling to be one of them, write a book that can change the world.
